patrick rockey is in the live vipir forecast center with more. more frigid weather and several chances for snow on the way. wednesday morning won t be quite as cold or quite as windy as tuesday morning, but it will still be awfully chilly. expect temperatures in the upper teens and lower 20s with wind chill values in the lower teens. but by the afternoon most of us will climb into the mid- and even upper-30s. in the afternoon we will also notice an increase in clouds ahead of a fast-moving area of low pressure. we call this kind of system an alberta clipper the clipper will swing through the region wednesday night. it could bring us some brief snow showers and even a light dusting before it moves out around midnight. then our attention turns to the monster storm on the way for friday and saturday. for a big part of the country this could be an historic winter storm. some parts of virginia, erst virginia and maryland could see 3 feet or more of snow. for us, there are still big questions about how much snow and how much rain will fall.

will start friday with snow showers before we see a changeover to rain in the afternoon. then we could see a changeover back to snow on saturday as the system pushes away and colder air comes rushing in. there is still a lot of uncertainty about this storm system and the forecast can and will change between now and then. check back

newschannel three continues with live vipir team coverage. todd corillo is braving the cold in norfolk tonight -- and todd -- weeks like this can put a lot of extra demand on the power grid? that )s absolutely right barbara -- everyone is bundling up right now -- and when you get home -- you re cranking up the heat--and the demand for power. there s no if and or but about it -- cold weather is gripping hampton roads right now. from the snow we saw on sunday -- to two more chances for it this week-- winter is making its presence known. as we bundle up outdoors -- folks are also looking for ways to stay warm at home. dominion virginia power spokesman bonita harris says cranking up the heat means more demand for energy. more heat consumption can also

dominion says there are a few simple ways to avoid that. with more winter weather possible soon -- the utility companies are keeping a close eye on forecasts -- so they can staff appropriately when issues arise dominion tells us if your power does go out when it s this cold out -- the best thing to do is report it immediately! the sooner they know -- the sooner they can fix it.

breaking news in surry county -- newschannel 3 s brendan ponton is live where a fire is burning at a meat processing plan. and brendan -- how is it going out there? firefighters are battling a huge fire at a meat processing plant building behind edwards ham processing plant building behind edwards ham shoppe on rolfe highway. the building is fully engulfed by the fire with smoke showing, according to emergency services coordinator tamara arthur. re agencies from claremont, ndron and surry county are rking the fire. le of wight and sussex fire partments are assisting the ews. ews have cleared the building d say no one was inside. ports of explosions were heard ter the fire started. e call about the fire came in at 12:39 p.m. on tuesday. lice have arrested the man who they say--was involved in double homicide -- that lead an officer-involved ooting. police say they arrested 33- ar-old laratio dantzler. officials say he shot and killed cadre grey and quinton kelly. it happened last thursday on 14th street and wickham avenue. police got a call about an accident-- but when officers got there-- they found grey and kelly dead inside a vehicle. a little while later-- officers found someone who matched the description of a possible suspect. that )s when police say dantzler and the officer both fired their weapons. he was released from the hospital yesterday. new at 5. a man accused of gunning down his ex-girlfriend with her

newschannel 3s margaret kavanagh joins us live from the newsroom. margaret we know federal marshals were looking for anthony smith for several days. they were but caught him on thursday. today he wore an orange jumpsuit and his feet were in chains during his arraignment in newport news. thony smith jr is accused of ooting his ex- girlfriend in e head on january 4th. day he was granted a court appointed lawyer after telling the judge he was no cash. when asked by the judge if he has a job - he said not anymore. days before her death -- dashanika sherrod got a protective order against smith. news channel 3 previously spoke to her father. 42:44 my daughter was beautiful lovely sweet and she would not hurt nobody she loves her kids and she loved her family jimmie says his daughter broke up with smith just before her death and the two had been off and on for several years. she had two young children. police say smith kicked down the door and shot her -- with the kids and her mom in the apartment. we reached out to smith today in an effort to speak to him about the charges that he is facing - but he declined an interview with us. he was arrested last week. 43:42 i m wounded for life you

smith a whole list of charges including burglary, first degree murder, failure to appear and other gun charges. hes expected back in court march 11th. the judge declined our request to have the camera in courtroom. live in the newsroom, mk, newschannel 3 police in suffolk need you to take action against crime. they )re looking for the man who-p&robbed a rite aid. it happened sunday night just after 10-30 on north main street. police say the man you see here-- entered the store-- implied he had a weapon and then demanded prescription drugs. once he got the drugs-- the man ran off. no one was hurt. if you know anything about this robbery-- take action and call the crime line at 1-888- lock-u-up. police in virginia beach have arrested the man they believe committed two robberies over the weekend. malcolm kyle is charged with armed robbery, attempted armed robbery, and a third petit larcey offense. police say, he robbed a seven- 11, with a knife, on saturday. then police tell us they heard about another robbery --that night --on pacific avenue. police were able to identify kyle based on a

on the military watch. searchers combing the seas off the hawaiian island of oahu have found three of four life rafts deployed after a marine helicopter collision. coast guard officials say there is no indication anyone was on board any of the rafts. two choppers crashed into each other off oahu )s north shore late thursday with 12 marines on board. there has been no indication that anyone survived. more than 60 marines have been involved in the search, along with navy divers. coast guard officials said they will consult with the marines to determine how much longer the search will continue. sergeant jeffrey sempler from spartanburg south carolina is one of the 12 marines who went missing. friends and family came together

implementation. 26 states have challenged the president s authority in the past. the case is expected to be heard in april -- and decided in june. the internal revenue service is accepting tax returns starting today. but remember -- employers have until the end of the month to mail your w-2 forms. if you do your own taxes -- and you made less than 62-thousand dollars last year -- you can use )free file )-p&through the i-r-s. a bizarre end to a police chase -- which suddenly turned into a dog chase on a california freeway. officers with the california highway patrol approached a parked vehicle on a freeway last night. they say the female driver sped off as the cops were walking towards the car. the driver surrendered a short time later near long beach. but when she got out of her car -- multiple dogs jumped out too. it took the officers several minutes to gather the dogs as traffic continued to back up on the freeway. the norfolk police department is remembering the life of one of their own -- killed in the line of duty. a memorial service was held earlier this afternoon for k9 krijger

newschannel 3 s nadeen yanes joins us live from the pet cemetery where the graveside service for kree-ger just ended. we are here at garden of the pines cemetery where 4 year old krijger was just laid to rest. he was shot and killed in the line of duty last week and today hundreds of people and officers from across the country came to pay their respects and honor krijger s life. norfolk, va.- norfolk police held a private memorial service for k9 officer krijger today at 2p.m. that private memorial service was for the law krijgerenforcem ent community only and will be held at the norfolk police k9 range. an internment with full honors by the norfolk police honor guard will follow at the garden of the pines pet cemetery in virginia beach. krijger was killed on monday, january 11th after police say an armed, barricaded suspect shot and killed the him while police were trying to arrest him. krijger, which means warrior in dutch had served 3 years
